LASIK Surgery – this is the best-known laser refractive surgery to correct vision problems. This can be an alternative to prescription glasses or contact lenses.

LASIK is an acronym for Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis, which literally means the "sculpting" of the "cornea."

In eyes with normal vision, the cornea bends (refracts) light precisely onto the retina at the back of the eye. With farsightedness (hyperopia), nearsightedness (myopia), or astigmatism, the light is bent incorrectly which results in blurred vision.

Prescription glasses or contact lenses can correct vision, but reshaping the cornea will also provide the necessary refraction. In LASIK surgery, a special type of cutting laser is used to precisely change the shape of the dome-shaped clear tissue at the front of your eye (cornea) to improve vision.

Criteria for an ideal candidate:

Age Requirement: Candidates must be at least 18 years old.
Eye Development: It's crucial to wait until your eyes have stabilized before LASIK, typically after 18 years.
Absence of Severe Eye Conditions: Candidates should not have serious eye conditions like macular degeneration, retinal detachment, or glaucoma, as these can impact vision and require treatment prior to LASIK.
Stable Vision: Vision should have remained consistent for at least one year, ensuring that eyeglass prescriptions have not significantly changed during this period.
Suitable Refractive Error Range: Refractive error should fall within an appropriate range, determined during pre-LASIK screening and influenced by factors such as corneal thickness and pupil size.
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Candidates should not be pregnant or breastfeeding due to potential hormonal effects on corneal shape and vision stability. It's advisable to undergo LASIK after these stages.
